Young scholar Pu Songling encounters danger on his journey and is forced to spend the night at Lanruo Temple. There, he is captured by a toad and a turtle and taken to the bottom of a strange ancient well. The two spirits compete in telling stories and force Pu Songling to judge their quality… Ultimately, Pu Songling, left with no other choice, tells his own wondrous tale.　　This film is structured in chapters, consisting of a main storyline, "The Story Under the Well," and five adapted versions of classic Liaozhai stories: "The Taoist Priest of Laoshan," "The Lotus Princess," "Nie Xiaoqian," "Painted Skin," and "Daughter of Lu Gong," totaling six chapters.
